The other day Carson and I were talking about how when we blog about a particular burro, cat, dog, donkey, goat, horse, pig or sheep, it often happens that particular critter becomes the resident star at 7MSN or at Morning Bray that day.
For example, yesterday I found myself actually telling Bernard that he made Cat snort her Diet Coke, Duffylou loved how his legs were crossed, C in WI thinks his mug belongs on greeting cards, Ken and Mary Berry thought his picture would make a great book jacket picture (by the way, he immediately began writing his memoirs), and June thought he might like using the rake as an Awful Good Buttscratcher (Bernard also thought that was a fabulous idea).
In any case, mostly due to his shyness, poor Nigel really hasn’t had his chance to shine, so it’s all about him today. He’s a gorgeous boy.
I know I can’t rush it, but I so badly want to hug him and brush him. And wipe away his eye boogers. He still won’t let us touch him, but he does seem to be more and more comfortable with us as each day passes.
Baby steps are fine, buddy.
I can’t wait to see more of his personality emerge over time. For now, I know he’s a very quiet, shy and gentle soul.
And I think there are some serious wheels turning behind those beautiful eyes.
Oh, and I promise to pass along each and every one of your comments to Nigel today. ♥

Tell Nigel that I think he’s a very handsome boy and I love that little ‘tuff’ of hair on the top of his head. Given time he will be your ‘love bug’, but some guys you just can’t rush and at least he’s letting you take some terrific pictures of him.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the animals that are just a little harder to win over.
There is a lot going on inside their heads, there is a lot of personality inside their shells. In time, Nigel’s bond with you will be the Forever and Ever, Heart to Heart kind.

Tell Nigel I think his coloring is my favorite combination of all. He’s gorgeous and we love him just as much as the other cute characters there! He’ll be a pocket pet in no time.
Try this recipe. It brings my shy, rescued Peruvian Paso to his knees begging. He would do anything for another one.
Paco’s favorite treats:
1 c. bran cereal
1 c. grated carrots
1 c. molasses
1 1/2 c. flour.
Mix together. Put teaspoon full dough on greased baking sheet. Flatten with fork and sprinkle of sugar (like Peanut Butter cookies). 350 for 15 min. Be sure to rename them Nigel’s treats if he likes them, and he’ll feel extra special.

Boy, those sound good to me, too!! Only I’m not a horse. Or a burro.
Have you tried them with shredded apple?

You can replace the carrots with apples, too. My friend eats more of them than her horse does. Ha-ha.

Nigel, little buddy, people can be pretty scary at times. It makes sense to take a bit of time and scope things out.
You, you lucky guy, have ended up with some of the Good People. Some of the best people.
One day you’ll decide to try a few scritches, and I think maybe that will feel so good that you’ll decide to let *your* people share your personal space.
And you’ll love it, and so will they.

Nigel, we adopted a standard poodle boy from a rescue a few years ago. He was shy just like you and hid under the dining table for two months (don’t try that at your home!). Gordy eventually realized that this happy place is his forever and very loving home and he will never ever be mistreated again. It will take time, Nigel, but your parents are very patient.

Nigel, Nigel, Nigel (sigh) It’s OK little buddy. You’re safe. And loved. Your new Mom & Dad are good folks – just ask Ellsworth. And perhaps most important of all – you are not alone. You just have to believe. Take all the time you need, we’ll all be here when you’re ready.

Nigel, you are my favorite in this little burro herd (sorry, Bernard, Ellesworth and Fergus!) There is something about those sad and reserved eyes that just touched my heartstrings. So, Nigel, you are loved and cherished, so just take a big deep breath, and let all of your reservations release….. and get some skritches and treats!

From the first time I saw you Nigel, I noticed the cute little whorl on your face. And your muzzle that reminds me of velveteen with your little hair marks that look like freckles. You are one handsome fella and will be even more so if you let Mom and Dad love on you.

Nigel, take your time sweetie. I can see by looking into your eyes that you are a watcher and thinker. The day you allow ‘your mom’ to touch you, will be a huge milestone. Being touched with loving hands is a feeling you will want more and more.

He IS absolutely gorgeous. And, just the sort of fellow to win my heart over completely. (If it wasn’t already promised to Ellesworth.) He looks like a gentle soul who doesn’t go in for the big, flashy demonstrations of love, preferring quiet moments.
