Leah,
Bernard thinks a cake is a wonderful idea.
Does anyone out there have a recipe for a horse/donkey appropriate cake?

Happy Birthday to your sweet and silly Bernard. You have a treasured collection of photographs. You know how they say people and their dogs look alike? I’m lookin’ at that picture of Don and Bernard and thinking….hmmmm…..their expressions are similar. And I mean that in the nicest way:-)

CeeCee,
He is just a baby. We don’t know Fergus’s exact birth date, but we do know he’s also two years old.
While Bernard definitely acts like he’s two, Fergus interestingly has the mannerisms of a wise old man.

Oh. My.
What LOT of totally excellent pics. 🙂 🙂
I think perhaps my very fave is the one of Don and Bern with the same sort of bemused expression…………………….. But it’s awfully hard to choose.
Love him hugging both of you, love Ellsworth’s head on his back, love his nap, love him with Chuck……
🙂 🙂 🙂
Happy, happy birthday, to an amazing character.

Oh, happy birthday, Bernard!! You are such a handsome fella. What a great series of photos. My ‘recipe’ for donkey b-day cake is:
a whole bunch of shredded carrots, plus some sweet feed thrown in. Each girl gets a little ‘patty’ of ‘cake’. This year for their May b-days I was a bad mom and we didn’t have cake. I so need to make that up to them, or they may never forgive me. yikes. p.s. had the most wonderful day, spent with donkeys & mules at our state fair. You haven’t really lived until you’ve experienced a donkey costume contest 🙂

Happy Birthday Bernard!! You are loved soooo much! I hope your special day was wonderful 🙂
I found these recipes on the interweb – I have not tried them (since I don’t have a donkey nearby to use as a guinea pig) but they look like something Bernard and the gang might like.
Horse Tacos
Tortillas
2 cups molasses
Sliced carrots
Sliced apples
Sliced grapes
Bucket of sweet feed
Mix sweet feed and molasses. Then mix in the sliced carrots, apples, and grapes. Wrap the mixture in tortillas and serve
OR
3 sliced apples
2 teaspoons honey
8 peppermints, crushed
2 handfuls oatmeal, plain
3 teaspoons peanut butter
1/2 cup applesauce
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix honey, 1 handful oats, peanut butter, and applesauce in a bowl. Stir and put in microwave for 45 seconds. Spread apple slices in a baking dish. Add mixture on top of apples. Sprinkle peppermint and one handful of oats on top. Bake for 20 minutes or until peppermint melts. Once the peppermint is melted, it looks strange; but your horses will like it. Let cool until warm and sprinkle a little sugar on the top. Feed a little at a time to make sure it doesn’t upset your horse’s stomach.
OR
If you want something that takes a little less time – mix honey, sweet feed or oats in a bowl. When it’s thoroughly mixed place it on a plate in the form of a cake or even a carrot 🙂 You can use carrots as candles and sprinkle pieces of apple and shaved carrot pieces on the cake.
