We haven’t been able to get a halter on Nigel yet, but we know he’s trying.
Don has spent a lot of time working with Nigel over the last couple of weeks. Bernard, Ellsworth and Fergus have been a constant source of moral support.
Of course, Fergus is Nigel’s biggest fan…
…and Bernard always clears his calendar to offer comic relief.
On Wednesday, Don was able to get a lead rope around Nigel’s neck for the first time. I was so proud of both of them. ♥ ♥ ♥

Awww. He’s come such a long way from not even wanting to be touched. It’s wonderful you are taking your time with him.
And hooray for your progress, Don. Keep up the good work.

Now that’s progress. Bernard is totally cracking me up in the last photo. “Here’s my neck, dad, put it around me. I’m not afraid. Pay attention to me.”

Good work Don. One day at a time. If not today maybe tomorrow, or next week, It’s worth the time spent in the end.I’m glad to see Nigel so relaxed.

Looks like Don is doing a good job! I had an unbroke, very scared rescue horse some years ago…so I understand how patient you need to be. Nigel will get it one of these days…he just seems a little more shy than the others. (I guess that’s an understatement if we compare him to Bernard.) 🙂

Isn’t funny how it’s instinctual for them to be afraid of being ‘tied’?
I’m glad he’s coming around. Don is so patient. Being a cowboy about it would only backfire.

It’s funny how I immediately think, “Oh poor thing . . . so scared,” when, really . . . Nigel apparently has the strongest self-preservation instincts of all of them!

Oh man… these baby steps are so familiar to me! Doesn’t it just warm your heart when you see in their eyes that they know they have overcome an obstacle and know that they’ve done something to make you happy? Chester gets positively proud and walks with a lighter step – it warms me all the way to my toes!
Keep up the good work, Nigel (and Don!!) – you’re doing great.

Wonderful! Keep up the good work Don; I think Nigel is going to be “your” donkey. He is definitely a thinker, he ponders things for a while before moving on to the next step.
