Don and I often talk about how magical Morning Bray Farm is, but we can’t figure this one out.
From out of nowhere, a baby mallard appeared in our garage yesterday.
Baby’s parents were not to be found, but Baby is extremely alert and seems quite strong.
Don has Baby in the powder room with a heat lamp and a warm, fluffy blanket, poultry starter feed and ample water. Naturally, we weren’t properly equipped to handle baby ducks until just a few weeks ago.
What can I say? Isn’t this a teensy bit odd? Good, but odd?
Saturday update: Don has named her Charlotte. If she’s a boy, Charlie.

Maybe the parents of baby mellard are readers of your blog and know about the happy ducklings at Morning Bray Farm?
He is so cute 🙂

Good thing you don’t live in the migratory path of elephants or hippopotami…imagine one of their orphans in your powder room.

Carson,
All things considered, what’s wrong with a little more poop? 😉

These little ones know where a “good home
is” …We raised ducks several years ago and Dixie (the duck, a female mallard)
would follow Dickie the cocker spaniel
and Goofy the cat all over the yard. She
was a member of the family for many years.
Hope Leland is well……

Annie,
Sounds like your adventure with Dixie was a great one.
Leland is doing much, much better these days. Thank you so much for asking. 🙂

I wonder if he/she will be content to live with the other ducks or will have the “call of the wild” to go find other Mallards.

I’m agreeing with the others. Mom and Dad decided he would have a better life with y’all. Perhaps there is some sort of sign indicating that your place is a great place for animals!
Years ago my husband had an entire clutch of ducklings (what do you call a bunch of them?) walk into a service bay at a car dealership. No sign of mom or dad. We raised two. They turned out to be Wood Ducks (which you aren’t allowed to have) so we were very quiet about having them, didn’t handle them and released them as soon as they could fly.

You and Don must be baby duck magnets. But maybe Carson is right about the migratory path of Big Beasties. What a cutie this one is.

Maybe the mama and papa abandoned him because he might be a tad weak in some way and they were flying over Morning Bray Farm and saw the other lucky ducks and their pool and thought, “QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!! meaning this is the place for our little duckling to grow stronger!!!”

The best surprises come in small packages! What a cutie! I agree with Carson – good thing you’re not on an elephant path. Anybody remember the movie “Elephant Walk” (1954) with Elizabeth Taylor? Don’t get in the way of elephants!!!

You mean you didn’t put that ad on craigslist “great duckling home, heat lamps and fluffy beading. Large guard donkeys. Free room and board.” ?
Hmmm. Maybe it was Bernard.
