The vegetable garden that we dreamt of in January came to life this summer. With excitement, we harvested some of our carrots yesterday.
Oh, look. Here’s one of Lenny‘s 287 sunflower seed stashes; found all over Morning Bray Farm. Thank you, Lenny.
Aren’t the cosmic purple carrots gorgeous?
Poor Patrick and Nigel. I just set the basket down for a moment. I didn’t mean to torture you.
From left to right: Cosmic purple, White Belgian (Blanche A Collet Vert), and Berlicum 2.
Samples, anyone? (Don’t miss Ellsworth’s and Nigel’s cute mouths; they’re drooling with anticipation.)
Patrick: Dad, I don’t care which flavor. Honest.
Patrick: Mmm. Good. Carrots are your pal.
Bernard: Ellsworth, do you need help with that? Here, let me help you. That’s what best friends are for…

We just have plain orange boring colored carrots at my house. Do the purple and white ones taste different, or is it just a color thing? I love the variety, they are so pretty together!
We also have chipmunk stashes in all our planters. I just let them grow and bloom, and then we all enjoy watching the harvest. 🙂

C,
They each do have a distinctive taste. When we tasted the cosmic purple ones earlier in the summer, they had a slightly bitter aftertaste.
We thought the white belgian carrots were extremely bitter, but the Boyz and Gracie love them. 🙂

Beautiful carrots! I sooooo want a garden but we need to build a fortress around it and there are always so many other projects. We planted fruit trees this year, maybe a few vegetables next year?

p.s. And we’ll need to make the carrot cake recipe that C in WI gave to us… using carrots from the garden and eggs from Hillary and Izzy. 🙂

So, are you going to get any of them or are you going to be overcome by those pleading donkey eyes every time you walk by hteir pen with a handful of carrots? ;0)
I planted Red Nantes Coreless, which, despite their name are an orange carrot, and the best juiciest carrots- apparently the mole thought so too….

Shirley,
The Boyz and Gracie will definitely get the majority of them. 🙂
Thanks for the tip on the Red Nantes Coreless… I’ll look those up.

What fun to grow different colors of carrots! I did some red ones last year and they were especially sweet (my boys aren’t that fond of carrots… so I get to eat them all!) The White Belgian looks very interesting!

I forgot to add how sorry I am for Lenny! He’s gonna go crazy looking for those seeds; “I know I buried them around here someplace!”
I wanted to let you know that I passed on the “One Lovely Blog” award to you. I really enjoy your blog and think it is truly lovely! A nice reflection of its author!

Oh, those beautiful cosmic purple carrots! They are to DIE for! My carrots didn’t amount to anything this year…chalk it up to another cloudy, wet & cool growing season.
Love how you displayed them in your basket – clearly the boys and Gracie did, too. 🙂

I was interested to hear the human take on flavor. Those purply ones are gorgeous.
We bought a bunch of mixed-color carrots at the farmers’ market last year, and were totally underwhelmed by the taste. I’m glad someone likes the pretty colors…..
I was amused by my reaction to them eating the greens. “?????? Oh. Wait. They’re not humans, are they.” 🙂
