Beautiful Harriet has been with us for a little over a week now.
Not a lot is known about her history, but her rescuers think hers was more a case of neglect than one of abuse.
Don and I are certain that Harriet hasn’t spent much, if any, time around other donkeys. She spent her first couple days here seemingly terrified of letting any of the herd get near her.
Despite that everyone was eager to make her acquaintance…
She much preferred spending time with Don or me.
On Christmas morning she decided to join the herd for breakfast. This was huge step in the right direction for her.
As herd leader, Ellsworth has been particularly interested in Harriet.
After getting over their initial differences, they’re now seeing how much they have in common.

I’m just so glad that one more neglected animal is being taken care of and loved . . . I can hardly stand it. The only way I can tell those two (Ellsworth and Harriet) apart is by Harriet’s worried eyebrows. I think Harriet’s on the right in the last picture. Right?

If it wasn’t for the white snip on the end of Ellsworth’s nose, I don’t know how I could tell those two apart. Will she ever be a riding donkey like Ellsworth?

Most likely not, but we’ll wait to see what the doctor says. Harriet has her first visit with Dr. D on Friday.

Thats so good to see all your big herd together Justina. You have to put the names on Harriet and Ellsworth otherwise I don´t know who is who. They could be twins.

So glad she’s figuring it out and the herd is letting her take her time. I, like C in WI, had to figure out a way to tell Ells from Harriet—it’s that bit of white that “bleeds” onto Ellsworth’s nose. I believe she’s also a bit taller than him, but I may just be looking at the pictures wrong.

Has it really been a week already?! I’m always amazed by how resilient and adaptable animals are to new and potentially scary situations. I shouldn’t be , but I am. I’ll bet Harriet will prove to be one of the more adventerous of the group once she gets settled in. I’m so glad to hear that she and Ellsworth are making nice. They truly do make a ridiculous pair. The photos are precious. And Elsworth and Harriet look so much alike. Side by side facing the camera, I can’t tell them apart. However, I know that you can. I know you feel a warm glow every time you look at your wonderful rescues that grace your barnyard. I especially like the photo of them all eating at the trough at the same time.

Everyone of your donkeys is special and offers something to the herd dynamic. What a joy they all are. Seeing them all eating at the same time is so heart warming.

That is amazing-what a brave girl she is to survive being suddenly part of a long eared herd. She must wonder why they need such long ears? (Thinking she is a human she knows HER ears cannot be that ridiculous!) I loved loved loved the twin pictures of her and Ellesworth! They are two long eared peas in a pod 🙂
I must ask though-is something wrong with your herd? They seem to never poo 🙂 I have never seen even a single pile of poo in your pictures. Do your donkeys have special magic skills of producing evaporating manure? Do you have poo flinging elves? I must know since my whole body hurts from mucking multiple times a day to stay ahead of the MONSTER manure piles my little herd of 6 produces 😉

Following your blog brings an incredible joy to me. Harriet stole a big piece of our hearts here in Vegas and to be able to see frequent updates from her new home, and hear the funny and heartfelt feedback that you post, gives me the peace that mothers can only feel when they know their child is safe and happy. Ohhh….. I have always been in love with Ellsworth… maybe that is why I fell so hard for Harriet =) I can always find her by that little notch in the top outside portion of her right ear.~ even if I didn’t see her little neck roll making her mane poke out awkwardly. I met you and Don along with Linda Carson at the new Tractor Supply in Bosque Farms a few years ago here in New Mexico…. I knew you were a great donkey couple right away…. You are both kind humans and Harriet was sooooo blessed to have you both during her last couple of years… My thoughts are with you both and with the donks and your fur kids… Rest easy Ms. Harriet… Hugs…
