Is that being on high alert and checking out the dog . I think it is the inate abiltiy for them to sniff or watch for potential danger. But the photo sure is a cute one. Ears are perked up and forward to catch sound. (I think- maybe not) 🙂

You think right! From The Donkey Companion:
A donkey’s hearing isn’t quite as acute as a dog’s but is much better than that of a human (or even a horse). When a donkey picks up a sound or sights something unusual, he pricks both ears in that direction to capture the minutest sounds and funnel them down to the ear canal and on to his brain. The donkey’s huge ears can each swivel and capture sound independently; separate sounds from each ear are processed and analyzed at the same time.

Oh, I am so glad that I did not make a “jack a– ” out of myself with that hearing comment. 🙂 Thank you so much for the informative reply. I suppose my farm and animal background helps me to understand a lot of the things about various animals. I also observe quite a bit of various things that are going on. My profession pretty much dictated that I know how to observe and then put 2+2 together to determine what behaviors meant -good or bad.
I’m going to see about getting The Donkey Companion. It sounds like something that I would like to read and own. I can’t have a donkey- I am too old at this point- but I live vicariously through you and Linda C.
PS: I never get tired of seeing pics of your heard or of the sound videos.

I’ve been MIA for awhile due to health/other issues…. Where’s Buck? Your guard animals were taking their duty seriously! They’re all beautiful.

Nancy,
We’ve missed you and I hope you’re feeling and doing much better now. Buck was standing just to the right of Nigel… he was right there with his brothers. 🙂

How are your donkeys around dogs? I’d love to have a donkey, but it would have to both leave my dogs alone, and keep coyotes away.
