We’re thinking that Big Red might be a good nickname for Ellsworth on riding days. He continues to improve and gains confidence each time we put the saddle on him. And, while we’re really proud of Big Red’s accomplishments, it looks like Bernard is his biggest fan.
Because we had the luxury of having my mom here to take pictures over the weekend, we discovered some things that may have otherwise been overlooked.
I was seriously shocked to see this picture. Because I was so focused on Ellsworth Big Red, I had no idea Bernard was back there sucking on the saddle pad.
It finally got to the point that we had to put Bernard out of the corral so we really could focus on Big Red. Love you, Bernard. ♥
Fergus stayed in the corral with Big Red to offer moral support and to receive butt scritches from Don.
Big Red was quite pleased with and deserving of his carrot rewards…
…and the extra love, praise and attention he received.
We ended on a positive note (I asked him to walk and he walked, then asked him to stop and he stopped).
Of course he enjoyed a good brushing afterwards…
…and provided his signature contented sigh when his biggest fan returned to the corral.

That Big Red must feel so proud of himself!
Y’know…with the bond that he and Bernard have, I wonder about cart training for the two of them. Not that I know anything about that, aside from Carson’s notes…

Loved your photographs today. I can just imagine the goober wanting to get in on the action and attention. So cute!
And how exciting is it that Ellsworth is such a good boy that he’ll give your Mom a ride around the corral!
Give Big Red a butt scratch from WI, please. 🙂

You know… looking at these photos reminds me of how much I truly miss the blue, blue skies of the southwestern U.S. Ours are always rather hazy and filled with humidity here in Virginia. *sighs*

Great post! Loved every minute of it. I honestly believe after rescuing Ellsworth/Big Red from that hellhole he was in, that he’d give his right leg for you! He really does look proud of himself, doesn’t he? Have a good weekend on the Morning Bray!

This has put such a huge smile on my face. Huge! When I saw that you were riding with just a halter and lead rope my first thought was ‘wonderfull’. He did so well. And you look great on him. I have always been a firm believer if you can ride your horse/donkey in a halter and lead, then you have reached complete trust.
Love, love this post.

Bernard is a little rascal, as curious as a cat. You can tell that Ellsworth is taking his “person carrying” responsibilities very seriously.
LOVE the look of adoration on his face as he is getting brushed and hugged.
I don’t know how you do it, but every post of yours makes me smile.

Ellesworth is doing fabulously, I’d say. Especially considering all the distractions. That Bernard…what a boob. *grin*

There’s so much that shines through these pictures. Ellsworth is such a peaceful, patient soul. Bernard pesky. I can see the love you and Don have for them. I really enjoyed this window on your world. Thank you!

Darn exciting! I love Bernard’s attempts to be part of the excitement.
So how do you train Big Red to ride? Have you been lead lining and all that? Did you just hop on? (God, I hope not!)
Details! Details!

I am very impressed with all of you! Hurrah! Look how well Big Red is doing!! Had he been ridden before at all?
Bernard… Huppie says you are doing a very good job but adds that if you get the blanket and pull really, REALLY hard that they will pay more attention to you than to your brother.
And lastly, I think that is the PERFECT hat in which to ride a burro but you need a flower in your hatband =) something that clearly shines as bright as the two of you.

awwwww! I wanna ride!!!! You two look so at peace together. And I always believe in ending on a positive note, too.
And yes….I noticed how great your hat is as well. I do agree with wooofwhinnywhisper that you need a flower – maybe a bright sunflower – in your hat.
thanks for sharing!

For just a minute there, I thought “Big Red” was going to bust out and get all Sea Biscuit-y” but then I remembered that’s not his style. He would naturally think first about his rider! Anyway, great pics and I’m glad to see that duo reunited at the end.

Oh my “Big Red” is a prince among donks. What a wonderful animal and spirit he is. And Bernard and he are such good buddies, it’s fun to see what a “fly” Bernard is…always flying close by.
