This cinch buckle is pretty significant for me this week.
I took my first riding lesson – EVER in my whole life! – yesterday. SO amazing. I felt like I really and truly rode a horse for the first time.
It wasn’t at all like my previous experiences, which for the most part, have been on horses that simply followed the rear end of the horse in front of them. Even if I had fun pretending I was, I know I was never the one in control on any of those horses.
My horse yesterday was Miracle Foxy Czar, a.k.a. Foxy; an Egyptian Arabian. Gorgeous. Gentle. Smart. Responsive. Who knew? Foxy responded to my legs, my posture, my balance. I hardly had to use the reins. Who knew a horse could respond to every single – even minute – change in me and what I was doing?
Linda, my instructor, must have thought I was maniacal. She kept showing me things, and I think I kept saying, “This is so cool!” And, “Oh my gosh!” And, “This is amazing!” I mean, seriously? How cool was it that all I had to do was lean forward a bit and Foxy’s pace picked up in response? How cool was it that all I had to do was push one leg or the other into him and he’d move for me? How cool was it that my balance determined whether he went left or right?
I told Don I felt as if I had been plugged into Foxy. A whole new world opened up for me… I never knew horses could read a person like Foxy read me. And it felt so good. So amazing! So real!
Here’s Foxy. Did I mention he’s gorgeous?
I can barely wait for our next lesson. ♥

Amazing, to think of being able to control a horse. I know people do it, but I’m not one of those people. Foxy sounds like a GREAT horse, and is, indeed, beautiful!
Incidentally, however, the angle of the photo puts me in mind of a former employer…

Foxy looks and responds just like my Paco does! (He’s such a great horse to ride and super sensitive to cues and smooooth.)
Good for you for taking lessons and enjoying them so much. Perhaps we’ll see a “short eared” addition to the Morning Bray Farm soon?

I’m excited for you. I rode a lot as a kid, but when I got my Morgans 8 years ago and started taking lessons, I was amazed! I have a beautiful black filly for sale;-) Seriously, have fun.

yea….you’re hooked…..what I am most impressed with is that you are so quickly in tune with the rider/horse relationship and that it is about working with the horse and not against him.

Oh, that is so cool! I never rode a horse and I didn’t know horses need so little to follow your wishes. They are glorious animals and Foxy is so handsome!

What a great way to start a learning journey! A lot of people would be pleasantly surprised by the nature of “usin'” Arabs (that have not been fired up for showing)–I have owned two and and now board one older gent. They’ve all marvelous horses!
[One quick safety note: I hope that the buckle was pulled flat against the latigo strap before you rode. I had a friend stab the buckle tongue right through her calf in an “unplanned dismount” when her horse spooked.)

Congratulations ! Welcome to the magical world of riding, not just sitting on your mount.
Best of all once you know what you’re doing Ellsworth will respond to your slightest signal … even better than he does already.
