Izzy became a mother for the first time on Sunday.
She’s a very protective mom and is doing a great job with her five babies. One duckling in particular is a carbon copy of Izzy as a wee babe. Recognize the Izzy smile?
Izzy as a wee duckling:
Everyone hatched out just fine, but Don thought it best to give duckling #4 a bit of help since it was taking an extremely long time to break out:
Interestingly, Izzy was completely okay with the help.
Everyone is doing just fine now:
Eating and drinking and frolicking… even if never far from Izzy:
Meanwhile, Emmy is sitting on 13 eggs, which we expect to hatch next week.
It’s a good thing we love little baby ducks.

Alison,
If we keep all of the babies, we’ll end up with a grand total of 24 ducks, which isn’t feasible. 🙂 We’ll want to keep a few of the females, but we’ll be looking to sell or give away most of the babies once they’ve gotten older.

Years ago I had two mallard ducklings (named Yankee and Doodle) bought at a feed store. They were so small they swam in the dog’s water bowl, and grew up climbing all over the Doberman. Ducks are fun, and funny. Your photos may actually trump web-ubiquitous kitten photos.

Izzy must be so proud of her new babies now that they all are hatched. I’m glad I had the opportunity to hold one the day before I flew home. That little darling tried to sleep in my hand by putting his head under his chest. That meant he felt so comfortable in my warm hand! 🙂

Oh my, how on earth do you leave for work each day!? Congratulations Nana and Papi!
PS…How do the other ducks do with the ducklings? Chickens are NOT welcoming of new chicks in the coop, and the mother/chicks must be separated.

CeeCee,
We don’t know yet how the other ducks will do with the ducklings. For now, we’re keeping everyone separate. Izzy seems quite happy with her current living arrangements. 🙂
