Monday is Baby Kassie’s 11th birthday. Umm, someone… hello? Honest, she was three years old just yesterday.
Kassie came into my life in June of 2002. An acquaintance asked me to take care of Kassie for a week while she went on vacation with her family. I was puzzled when she told me, “If you like her, you can keep her.” What?!
Back then, it was just Enzi and me. The day the acquaintance brought Kassie over, the first thing Kassie did was attack Enzi… full-on barking, snarling, snapping and biting. Poor Enzi was understandably terrified. The first thing Kassie did when she came into the house was pee on the floor. I remember the acquaintance saying very softly, “Oh Cassie, no, no.” Wow, ahem.
A stake and chain were included in Kassie’s “overnight bag.” The acquaintance told me I could put Kassie outside on the chain and leave her there all day. Kassie was used to that, after all. The first thing I did after the acquaintance left was throw the stake and chain in the trash.
Eight years later, I’m so happy I didn’t listen to those who told me I was crazy to take Kassie on. I will forever be grateful to the Baby for teaching me a very important lesson in life.
“If you wish to be loved, love.”

Wow, what a story! So glad Kassie found a home with you. :o) Are you still friends with that person?

Pat,
The acquaintance was truly only an acquaintance, so I didn’t keep in touch. I do wish they could see what a wonderful girl Kassie is now, though.

Aww – sounds like you both needed each other. What a sad way to own a dog, stake them out all day. No wonder she was a terror. The Schnauzer boys are simply mortified (as they sleep in their cushy beds in my office, dreaming of home made Frosty Paw treats later this afternoon).
Kassie, you won the dog lottery when you came to visit and never went back.

A total blessing. Both of you to each other.
This brings to mind my first rabbit. He was a holy terror. Biting me at every opportunity, growling at everyone. I spoke to a animal psychologist by telephone who suggested I just take him back to the pet store. I was aghast. The thought never crossed my mind. No. That was not an option. Little guy became my first soul mate. He would run circles around my feet every morning while I ate breakfast, doing the rabbit version of a mating dance. *grin*
Happy Birthday, Kassie!

I’d snap and bite too if chained in the yard for heaven sakes! Dogs need to be with humans, not staked!
So glad you took her. Such a big heart.

I have never, and will never, understand why people get dogs only to put them outdoors and leave them alone all day. I am so happy that this one little dog found a Home. I wish they all had Homes.

I think there were some mutual winners in this one. She just needed to find the right people for her.

There were two BRILLIANT sentences in this post!
1) The first thing I did after the acquaintance left was throw the stake and chain in the trash.
2) If you wish to be loved, love.
I absolutely love when people are intuitive with animals. I am standing and applauding. Really.
Special scritches for Kassie with a K.
