I love looking out the window to see our four youngest taking their morning siesta, acting like a herd and arranged like a pinwheel on the ground:

I love that their matriarch is standing watch over them:

And that when Nigel hears the clicking of the camera shutter, he stands up to join Gracie Belle on her watch:

And, I love that Ellsworth is always, always there for his herd, especially when he senses they need him:

A couple of days ago, Flartus jokingly worried about whether Bernard is growing up and becoming a mature young donkey.

Don’t worry, Flartus. He’s not. We give you five minutes of a still typical Bernard evening:

Nigel: Oh good grief, Gracie. There he goes again.

Ellsworth: There he goes again, Buck.

Ellsworth: Round and round he goes, where he stops, nobody knows.

Bernard: I never want to grow up. Hey, I wonder if Gracie wants to play with me.

Bernard: Not so much. I wonder if I can find someone who does.

Bernard: Buck, do you want to play with me?

Bernard: Please?

Buck: Okay, Bernard, I’ll play with you.

Bernard: Squirrel! Oh look, there’s mamma! Mamma, do you want to play with me?

Me: Oh dear. His ears are back. That means he really wants to play.

Bernard: Squirrel! Oh look, there’s Patrick! Patrick, do you want to play with me?

And there you have it. See? Don’t worry. ♥ ♥ ♥

Our friends from Casa de Cuckoo were here for a visit on Sunday.

For all of us, their visit was like a big, happy therapy session.

Bernard was on his best behavior. Instead of his usual playful craziness, he was calm and sweet with GK:

As always, Ellsworth was a gentle soul:

Bernard loved GK’s ear rubs:

 And GK’s hugs:

At first, the rest of the herd watched from the sidelines:

After seeing the benefits though, Buck decided to join the therapy session:

Before we knew it, GK was surrounded by many lovely donkeys:

GK’s smiles were priceless:

And, since we’re talking about donkeys and therapy sessions, I posted this video on Facebook. I’m posting it again here because it’s definitely worth watching if you haven’t seen it.

Posted on behalf of Edgewood Longears Safehouse in Edgewood, New Mexico:

Cinca was born October 24 and had such long legs that her foster mom decided to wait a little before notifying us to see whether the foal was ok. But as you can see in the pictures, she is doing very well and LOVES to play. Roxanne was a pregnant jenny rescued from Southwest Livestock Auction on October 16 together with another pregnant jenny and a gelding. The foals would have died at the feedlot had they been born there. The jennies were penned up together with intact jacks and stallions, and the feedlot owner has the reported practice of killing all surviving foals to save on feed.

Potential adopters and homes will be screened. Roxanne had trust issues at first but has been coming along wonderfully since her rescue. She is now accepting a halter and is becoming friendlier every day. Potential adopters of Roxanne and her baby should be aware that Roxanne probably was abused in the past and will need a patient and understanding environment to thrive in. Roxanne is about six years old at this point, thus at a good (donkey) age to be trained in various disciplines or even just for showing (she’s very pretty with a rare red dun coloring). Adopters will sign a contract with us granting us first right to buy the donkeys back if they are to be sold; the contract will also stipulate that they are not to be used for breeding and will need to be kept on a strict grass hay and/or barley straw diet.

Roxanne and Cinca belong to Edgewood Longears Safehouse but are currently in foster care at Kiva Donkey Rescue in Bernardo, NM. The two are up for adoption as a pair. If you are interested in visiting them, please call Diane Wiltshire at 505-480-2806 to set up an appointment. Bernardo is right on I-25 a short distance south of Belen, NM. All details concerning the adoption should be discussed with Dorothea or Andrew of Edgewood Longears Safehouse; please contact them at longears.safehouse @ gmail.com (remove spaces!). We will ask for a moderate donation toward our rescue expenses in return for ownership of the donkeys.

I’m sure you know by now that we watch the daily lineup with great interest and much fascination.

Now that Gracie  Snow White has started joining the lineup, she’s changing things up a bit.

Gracie: Yes, dahlings. It’s a girl’s prerogative to rearrange boys.

Gracie: All grey donkeys to the south, facing south, please.

Gracie: All non-grey donkeys to the north, facing north. Thank you, Boyz.

Patrick: Honest, mama, we’re just doing what she told us to.
