From Wikipedia:

Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterized by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. Prickles often occur all over the plant – on surfaces such as those of the stem and flat parts of leaves. These are an adaptation that protects the plant against herbivorous animals, discouraging them from feeding on the plant.

We’re so lucky that our friend Carson over at The 7MSN Ranch is a phenom at Photoshop.

I sent her this photo of Harriet straight out of my camera:

And she sent this masterpiece back:

Thank you, Carson. ♥

It was Thursday evening and I arrived home just as the sun was setting.

I found seven donkeys playing, grabbed my camera, and jumped out of my truck as fast as I could.

Joy to my heart. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Nigel has the perfect little black dress on his muzzle.

If you can’t see it, I did a little drawing to help you. (The lady is smiling, trust me.)

Nigel, honey, please forgive me.

While he’s still the strong, silent type, Nigel manages to communicate very well in other ways.

We love that he’s constantly becoming more demanding of our attention… we’re also always thankful that Nigel and Patrick are now best buds.

Beautiful Harriet has been with us for a little over a week now.

Harriet9

Not a lot is known about her history, but her rescuers think hers was more a case of neglect than one of abuse.

Harriet1

Don and I are certain that Harriet hasn’t spent much, if any, time around other donkeys. She spent her first couple days here seemingly terrified of letting any of the herd get near her.

Harriet7

Despite that everyone was eager to make her acquaintance…

Harriet6

She much preferred spending time with Don or me.

Harriet2

On Christmas morning she decided to join the herd for breakfast. This was huge step in the right direction for her.

As herd leader, Ellsworth has been particularly interested in Harriet.

After getting over their initial differences, they’re now seeing how much they have in common.

From our home to yours, may all your Christmas moments be merry and bright. ♥ ♥ ♥

Starting in September, I started seeing photos on Facebook of a donkey named Harriet. It shocked me how much she reminded me of Ellsworth.

Back in June, the poor girl was found sunk down in the dirt and unable to rise from her overgrown hooves.

A rescue organization in Las Vegas, Nevada took Harriet in immediately after learning of her situation.

You can read more about Harriet and the rescue organization, L.E.A.N. here.

From Harriet’s story on the L.E.A.N. website: Willing and unfrightened despite the painful trip and new surroundings, she showed her amazing character – gentle and sweet, with flickers of true donkey reluctance and subtle intelligence.  She adores attention and having her head and ears rubbed.  She will put her head into your chest and stand there, allowing to be cuddled like a giant Plushee doll.  Her soft strawberry flicked coat was groomed to perfection, and treatments applied to some lower leg psoriasis that had been ignored.  After several X-rays and consultation among the vets and farrier, Rodney Ketelhut trimmed her nightmare and started her on the path to comfort and consistent hoof care.

Because of the care given to her by so many wonderful people these last few months, Harriet has blossomed into the beautiful donkey that she is today.

After learning more about Harriet, Don and I decided that she belonged with the herd at Morning Bray Farm.

Harriet will be home for Christmas. ♥ ♥ ♥
