In the land of skunks, he who has half a nose is king

There were no warning barks this time, which leads us to believe she was stalking the skunk at 6 am yesterday morning.
Don and I were in the kitchen getting ready for our day when Kassie came in shaking her head and gagging. The stink hit us like a brick wall.
The Baby was quickly escorted into the garage for her de-skunking bath.
Lord have mercy, there’s never a dull moment around here.
She’s an old pro at this now. This is the second time for her this year, which you could argue is a blessing…
…she was sprayed four times last year, after all.
We’ve given up thinking that she’ll listen to us when we tell her those black kitties are bad, bad, bad.
She knows they are, but she just can’t help herself.
‘Cause she’s my Baby, my Kassie, my little Baby Kassie.
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
By the way, if you need the recipe for a skunk solution that really works, you’ll find it on this post.

Ellsworth’s doing that mouth thing again
Posted by Morning Bray under Donkeys | Tags: Ellsworth |[12] Comments
Look familiar? This is yesterday’s daily lineup. Honest to goodness, as always, the boys were in the same order and same direction.
And, as usual, Bernard was in a playful mood and was aggravating Fergus, who, along with Nigel, was trying to catch a few winks before dinner. For the first time in a while, Ellsworth was doing his mouth thing again.
Being that it was another beautiful fall day, I wanted to spend some time with the boys. I felt a bit like the Pied Piper leading them out to the pasture.
This shot of Ellsworth’s whiskers is for Cathy.
Ellsworth is ordinarily so relaxed, he’s practically horizontal. Look at the hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth.
But there he goes with that mouth thing again. He only does this when flies are on his face.
Of course, Bernard’s always there when Ellsworth needs a hug.
And, as always, Bernard is ready to play.

Maize Maze

Every September and October, the Albuquerque Maize Maze comes to life.
Don and I spent a glorious fall afternoon yesterday exploring the seven-acre corn maze. This year’s maze depicts wildlife found in Albuquerque and is called Coyote Magic.
We wandered leisurely through the maze for a couple of hours.
The maze is precisely cut by GPS technology. Very cool.
Morning glories were everywhere. They took my breath away.
Beautiful.

The daily lineup

Just like clockwork, the boys line up next to the barn for a stand up siesta every afternoon. Oddly enough, most of the time they’re in the same order and same direction. Ellsworth on the left facing north. Bernard to Ellsworth’s south, facing south. Fergus to Bernard’s south, facing north. Nigel to Fergus’s south, facing north.

Magical moments

Don and I often talk about the magical and unexpected moments we experience at Morning Bray Farm. They seem to happen a whole lot here.
Take Baby Boy, for instance. He’s gotten to the point now where he follows me around the corral and pasture… his nose to my rear. Momma is frequently not far behind these days. That’s magical, considering they were feral when they came to us a year and a half ago. I love them and they make me smile.
Check out Gladys. After laying a dozen or so eggs and being inattentive to her nest the last couple of weeks, she’s been faithfully sitting on her X marks the spot eggs in the goat stall for the last two days and nights. Isn’t she pretty?
She doesn’t seem to mind our comings and goings. That’s magical too. I can’t help but coo at her and smile every time I walk past.
Unexpected surprises can also be magical. For example, finding one of Lenny’s winter stashes in the hose storage container by the barn. How does he know he needs to save for the upcoming months? Whether it’s magic or instinct, made me smile.
Yesterday, this one made me say, “Well, I’ll be.”
The sandhill cranes are back in town. This was our first official sighting of the year from Morning Bray Farm. The magic in this… Limpy (in the foreground) is back for her third straight year in a row. In case you’re wondering, Limpy limps. That’s how we know it’s her.
She brought a big old smile to my face. Simply magical. ♥

Doing what he oughter
Posted by Morning Bray under Farm | Tags: American bullfrog, bullfrog, frog |[22] Comments
Jeremiah was a bullfrog…
An American bullfrog, actually… and the largest frog species in North America.
They’re nocturnal predators and will ambush and eat just about anything they can fit in their mouths, including insects, mice, fish, birds and snakes. They sit quietly and wait for prey to pass by, then lunge with their powerful hind legs, mouths open wide. Who knew?
We see quite a few during the summer months along the banks of our irrigation ditch. Don enjoys driving me mad each time we spot one by singing this little tune.
There’s a little green frog (glumph)
Swimming in the water.
A little green frog (glumph)
Doing what he oughter.
He jumped right off of the lily pad
The little duck bit.
And he said “I’m glad,
I’m a little green frog,
Swimming in the water,
Glumph, Glumph, Glumph.”
