We’ve had a wonderful week of firsts at Morning Bray Farm.

On Saturday, Ellsworth rode with his new headstall, bit and reins for the first time. One day later, Patrick was wearing his first fly mask and loving it. Then, on Monday, Ellsworth and I had our first riding lesson together. We even got him ever so briefly up to a trot.

Despite all of the excitement and activity here, Don and I always make it a point to spend time with every one of our critters every day… even if just for a few one-on-one uninterrupted minutes.

For the very first time on Tuesday, Nigel let me really brush him. We’ve brushed him before, but he never allowed us to brush him for more than a few minutes… and definitely not all over.

This time, Nigel allowed me to brush him until the comb ran cleanly through his hair… about 20 minutes. We took a medium-sized dog’s worth of hair from him.

I throw the boys’ hair over the fence so that the birds can nest with it, and so Bernard doesn’ t eat it.

Yesterday, Nigel graduated to a dandy brush and the FURminator. Again, he stood quietly while I brushed and brushed and brushed him.

It looks like he has a gorgeous black coat underneath all of his old, dirty hair.

Being that Nigel is four years old this year and this is the first time he’s accepting regular grooming, we can’t wait to see what the boy underneath really looks like.

Beautiful, for sure. ♥ ♥ ♥

We were fortunate to have a new friend, Cat with Cats, visit us over the weekend.

The Boyz could barely contain their excitement when they realized Cat arrived bearing gifts of Paco treats.

As always, it was great fun having a fellow animal lover in our midst.

Cat was great fun and great help.

Thank you, Cat! ♥

The Boyz reminded me yesterday that they haven’t been featured on the blog in a while.

I’m sorry, Boyz.

You’ve missed the new game that Bernard likes to play. He comes up behind me and gently puts his head between my legs so that I’ll put one of my legs over his back.

I think  know he just likes being hugged.

Patrick continues to come out of his shell more and more with each passing day. He’s a remarkable donkey boy.

So does Nigel, by the way. We’re now touching Nigel’s face, so it’s a matter of time before we get a halter on him. He’s a remarkable burro boy. (Many thanks to Mel in NY for your advice with Nigel.)

You’ve also missed how happy everyone is when Don daddy gets home.

Daddy pushes down tree branches so the Boyz can eat leaves. The Boyz love leaves. Good golly… just look at Ellsworth’s face.

I kind of think the Boyz look like giraffes when they’re eating leaves from the trees.

Yes, Patrick… that’s a good thing.  ♥

He’s growing like a beautiful flower. Blossoming against beautiful blue skies. ♥ ♥ ♥

I made Paco treats for the boys the other day.

Judging by the looks on their faces, you can tell who has had Paco treats before.

Bernard has no shame.

Yes, Bernard is actually smiling.

I love that Goober.

Ellsworth loves Paco treats too.

So does Nigel.

What do you know… Fergus too.

Fergus does a great James Cagney impersonation every time.

Can you tell from this picture that Patrick hadn’t yet experienced a Paco treat par-tay in his mouth?

And that in this picture he had?

Patrick decided instantly that he loves Paco treats too.

Life is good. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Patrick has definitely been accepted as one of the herd. Day by day, he’s also learning how to be a donkey.

Just look at what I caught him doing yesterday afternoon. Giving his first hug. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

To Carson: Thank you for your Photoshop talent. You did a wonderful job of softening the shadows on Patrick’s face!

Patrick had his first foot trim ever this morning.

He surprised us all and did exceptionally well.

No sedation necessary.

We could tell Patrick was frightened, but he was a very brave boy.

Understandably, Patrick doesn’t like having his hind quarters or back legs and feet touched, so we were worried about whether Shorty would be able to trim Patrick’s back feet.

Being the excellent and extremely patient farrier that he is though, Shorty charmed Patrick’s back feet right off the ground.

There was a little kicking initially, but trimming Patrick this morning was a breeze for Shorty compared to trimming Ellsworth once upon a time.

As soon as his trim was done, Patrick went right over to his big brother.

We’re so proud of you both. Our sweet, sweet boys. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

A kind heart is a fountain of gladness making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles.

Ellsworth has a kind heart.

Just yesterday, he shared a tasty stick with Patrick.

And then gave him a hug. ♥

Patrick is doing well at Morning Bray Farm.

He’s settling in nicely.

It has taken a while, but his brothers are allowing him to join them for meals more with each passing day.

I think he’s happy here. He never has to be alone again, which seems to suit him just fine.

He’s a very sweet, gentle and curious boy. Once in a while, we find him a short distance away from the other boys looking quite sad. I wonder what he’s thinking when he does this and I hope he can forget.

Most of the time, though, he’s working on becoming a character right along with everyone else.
